Perhaps not every aspect, but certainly the fundamentals of taking our behavioral cues from the natural world around us, constant observation and the vitality of logic and productive behavior as opposed to emotional, destructive behavior. It does not surprise me at all that people knew more of themselves so long ago; compared to our lives today, there was so little to get between them and themselves, if you catch my meaning." - Farted
I think I do. I feel like that society provides us with much distraction. If I had to sum up my life views, I'd say:

-Bad shit happens to good people
-We must rely on ourselves for strength
-We can't rely on others to carry our burdens
-We must press on regardless
That may sound selfish at first, but I also feel that when at all possible, we should provide strength for others. Stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves, and stand up for yourself.
One of my absolute favorite genres of music, and one that I feel has gotten a pretty bad reputation over the years. While today, pussies slander what "goth" was originally all about with their faggot makeup and gay vampire outfits, the original music of bands like Joy Division, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy was pretty fucking awesome. Elements of post-punk, psychedelica, progressive and similar experimental bits and pieces all tied together to make some atmospherically rich and, at times, emotionally impacting music.

Below I'll post some of my favorite examples of what I consider truly "gothic" music to be, while leaving out any metal-oriented bands since this is about the somewhat softer side of the overall genre.

Bauhaus were originators of the truly "gothic" sound of post-punk and rock, along with Sioux And The Banshees and others. What truly made Bauhaus stand out amongst their peers were the eerily pale and pained vocals of frontman Peter Murphy, whose sound and looks combined to make a sort of ideal "gothic" frontman. Guitarist Daniel Ash was also one of the most criminally underrated players of his time in terms of creativity.

While most will point to "Bela Lugosi's Dead" as both Bauhaus' best moment and the central point of Goth's evolution into a full-fledged genre, I instead insist on "Mask", my favorite Bauhaus track and one I feel more fully encompasses the atmosphere of goth:
So, what would it be? What non-metal album is, to you, the one you could spend an eternity with? Ponder this, because the answer usually dictates what your favorite record is, what your general taste in music is all about AND how big your dick is. It's true, they've done studies.

Music is, of all the various artforms available to us, one of the most deceptively simple and inherently rewarding. Almost all of us, enough to consider it near-universal in nature, are capable of forming melodies and rhythms, however simplistic or complex. We have a natural affinity for specific sounds, which begin in the womb, with the first sounds we likely hear; the rhythms of our mother's hearts. (inb4 homo)

Fast forward to today, and it's fun to imagine how our tastes in music have evolved throughout our lives. I can make connections to certain musics and certain personality traits of mine, also musics tied to memories, people and places. My biggest "for instance" is the band Coldplay: a band I would probably hate without the personal connection songs like "Trouble" and "Clocks" had on me, timing themselves perfectly with my first real relationship. Now, I look forward to new Coldplay releases, if only in the hopes that they'll do something that reminds me of how important I once found them in my life. That sort of thing is unbelievably rare in people, to come to care for something through alternative factors that, by definition, we would otherwise care nothing for. Music is one of the few things in the world where this is commonplace.

The point of this thread is to ask you, ladies and (mostly) gents, how do you listen to music? What do you expect from it? What do you WANT from it? How does metal, for instance, inspire you? How do other sounds? Can you connect certain songs, certain lyrics, to certain times in your life? How about the connection between aspects of our personalities and the types of music we enjoy? Do you see a connection there?
Let's discuss this shit. Internet: Serious business.

Our other "Now Playing" thread is an image-based album thread, not necessarily a true "Now Playing" thread, which typically involves specific songs. This thread, however, is for specific songs. With the magic of youtube, post what you're listening to right now and instantly share it with the M&S community. Fuckin' internet magic!

TUTORIAL: If you're unaware of how to imbed youtube videos into your posts, there's two simple ways to do it:

1) If using the regular (non-quick post) method of posting, you can simply click the little television at the far right of the control panel (the white box outlining your post), click "youtube" and insert the link to your video.

2) If using the quick-post method, it's as simple as tagging your post with this: " www.youtubelink.lol at the end to close it up. Basically, you're wrapping around the link.

Remember, it's absolutely cool and expected to comment on songs as they're posted, but do always try and add a new song into the mix when you do this. It's easy to get sidetracked for a page or two (or 12, which I've seen all too much of on other boards in the past) debating a specific song, which evolves into an album, into a band and finally into requesting acts of sexual procreation with each other's female parental units. So feel free to opine, but don't derail the nature of the thread.

So let's start this bitch off with some new(er) Rush, my favoritest band of all time. Of the two tracks from their upcoming "Clockwork Angels" album they released awhile back, this is definitely my favorite:

I've been writing reviews for http://www.musicemissions.com since August of 2007. In that time, I've given out more than a few "perfect" scores (5/5) and the occasional, much more distinguished "vault" status we use to signify specific albums as being true musical classics. This latter category is typically hotly contested, and was a real point of aggression back when our website featured a message board.

So, in the nature of sharing some of my work with a wider audience, and maybe sparking some conversation, I'm going to post one of either my 5/5 or vault reviews every day or two in this thread. Agree or disagree, let me know and if you haven't checked some of these records out before now, obviously my opinion will be that you do so immediately.

...remember, from Batman? The Joker? Jack Nicholson? Well, fuck you if you don't.

To the point, I am somewhat depressed by what this forum has become. We've got a steady average of probably 3 new posts per day, a serious lack of participation by our supposed "regulars", and, let's be honest, next to nobody new has arrived and stuck around. What gives?

This is the only message board I frequent on a daily basis. Why? Hell, I don't know, I am a member of at least 8 others I can think of and probably twice as many I cannot recall. This place seems to have some potential if we could just inject more energy into it.

How? Well, I'm willing to put some time into that in regards to new "staple" threads (threads you see, typically stickied and very active, at other message boards) and generally staying more active. I'll be the first to admit I don't always take the time to check out and/or offer my opinions on a lot of the bands brought up here, but that will be changing. Perhaps you should do the same?

Now, I'm well aware we all have lives, and we're all different ages and some of us have school, work, blah blah blah. Me, I'm 27 goddamn years old, self-employed working from home, and half of my job is to listen to music before I write about it. If you don't have my sort of time on your hands, that's cool. But think of how much more enjoyable this place would be if each of us took the time to actually show up daily and make some noise? Doesn't have to be anything major, just a post or three about what the fuck ever.

My experience working with, running and participating in message boards is that they offer a unique experience of chatroom-like immediacy blended with the ability to discuss specific topics near-simultaneously. Honestly, I think message boards are starting to die off a bit due to all the fancy-schmancy hollabaloo facebook twitter shenanigans. But none of that shit offers what a good list of forums does; quality discussions that can be jumped into, and out of, at any point and time.

So, I want this place to be better. If anyone else does, let's figure out what we can do. Expanding content, the addition of "staple" threads, perhaps the addition of new forums, let's fucking bounce some ideas around and take this bitch to new levels.

It perplexes me how I haven't heard a single thing about this band on this forum - neither positive nor negative (I even made a search, the only two results were a spot on Noli's want list and a post I made in Now Playing), which makes this thread even more warranted.

When finding artists to compare Baroness to, the name that pops up most often is Mastodon. It's certainly justified given that both bands are proggy, sludgy and popular with hipsters, but they don't sound all that similar. Mastodon is on the eclectic and aggressive side of prog, while Baroness is on the more structured and catchier side of it (not that there's no aggression to be found here, though). I sense a slightly stronger punk presence in the band's second album, though that could just be me.
