Controversial Opinions on Metal

I actually sort of like Metallica's St. Anger, and the mix doesn't really even bother me.[/*:m]

In terms of metal, I'm not a fan of Iron Maiden at all. I know they're influential, but they don't hold my interest for more than a song or two here or there.[/*:m]

I'm thinking about checking out some noise music, I think it might have some merit as a musical artform. Not controversial in GMD, but everyone I know just laughs when I mention it.[/*:m][/list:u]

Gooooooo

Umm most power metal sucks. Folk metal is okay though.
I don't like Opeth. Or most Prog in general.
St. Anger does suck. (Not controversial just thought it would piss The Butt off)

I don't like Opeth, or most prog either. Some bands can do it great (like Between the Buried and Me, or Metallica on ...And Justice For All), but most I've heard are just horrible.

Also, I don't like St. Anger as a whole, but I enjoy 4 or so songs. The title track is actually pretty decent.

I prefer accumulating music at least an album at a time, rather than song by song..
On the vocal side, I mostly prefer clean vocals, other times I prefer high shrieks, not that much into the lower growling. It doesn't matter much for me to understand the lyrics but I like to comprehend a line or 2 from a song.... also, Butt and Matt already know this but I'm really picky when it comes to vocals actually Pacman
I've started to love several songs cause of their lyrics and have dropped quite a few songs cause I didn't like the lyrics...
I think that one of the reasons I got such a hard time accepting some albums/bands and eventually growing to love them is because at first I don't understand their music and I don't really get what's so special about them. But with time and over several listenings, every band that I first was at a meh stance with, starts establishing itself in my eyes as a personality and I become a die-hard fan...

Some of it was copypastaed from Ye Cove but I'm a lazy bastard...

Phil Anselmo is one of the, if not the, greatest clean vocalist ever.

How is this controversial?

Also, I enjoy Lordi, Dream Evil and Dragonforce.

Might just be where I usually frequent, metal-wise, but Phil and the bands he's been in (Down, Pantera) are usually looked down upon in metal circles.

More controversial opinions

Motorhead can frig off, I don't care for them at all.[/*:m]

Born Again is in my top 5 Sabbath albums[/*:m]

...And Justice For All >>>>>>>>>> Ride the Lightning > Master of Puppets. FACT.[/*:m]

...And Justice for All is the best Metallica album, I agree with you.

Master of Puppets is overrated. I'd rank it AJFA > Ride the Lightning = Kill 'em All > Master of Puppets > Death Magnetic > Load > Black Album > Reload > St. Anger.

I just ranked Load above the Black Album.

Born Again is almost in my top 5, it is number 6! Disturbing the Priest is in my top 10 of favorite Sabbath songs.

In terms of skill and not necessarily composition skills, Rob Trujillo > Cliff Burton. Imo Cliff Burton played his bass in a way that tells me he wishes he was a guitar player.

Raining Blood is overrated. Not overrated as where it stands in regards to the rest of metal, but overrated compared to the rest of the Slayer albums. God Hates Us All and Christ Illusion are my favorite albums. Don't be mistaken, Raining Blood is still super awesome.

Most metal with a Viking theme sucks. The big exception that comes to mind for me is Tyr, and Tyr is fucking awesome.

I don't like most Norwegian black metal that much. I make exceptions for Immortal and Burzum.

With a few exceptions (as in a few songs, not a few bands) I do not like any Prog Metal.

I consider myself fairly patriotic, but if it's American and not Metallica, Slayer, or Megadeth I probably don't like it. I think Finland makes the best metal overall, but I don't think that's extremely controversial.

Most bands that use a lot of double bass suck. The ones who use it correctly, however, are the best. Dave Lombardo and Horgh come to mind.

Sin ti no puedo morir.
Sin ti vagaré.

* I HATE Pantera. Dime was a great guitarist, The band were great musicians, but terrible songwriters.
* CAN'T STAND Lamb Of God
* Can't STAND CHILDREN OF BODOM
* Can't stand Justice for All aside from the fast stuff. Death Magnetic is alright, but it's too little too late. And nothing I can listen to as often as the 1st 3 albums.

I love specific Opeth albums, and prog metal has some great artists. Some prog metal bands are too concerned with technique and not the act of writing a great song. Some forget they're Metal and are too much prog. But when they get the combo right it can kick ass.

Now thats controversial. Are they even Metal?

Back in the early 90's Bjork had the Carcass guys remix her song Isobel. That in my opinion makes Bjork more metal then Lordi. Lol

-I really don't care for the likes of Motorhead

-I believe Slayer made one really good album (Reign in Blood) and everything after got worse and worse. The stuff before was decent, though.

-Metallica are still my favorite metal band. AJFA>>>>>>>MOP>>>>>everything else.

-Mastodon are the best metal going today. "Crack The Skye" is something out of a metal wet dream. I don't care how "hardcore" or "fast" they are, they're writing the most creative and impacting metal nowadays. Meshuggah falls a close second but they're really pushing their sound to it's limit.

-I don't like anything Dio has ever done.

-Most power metal is garbage. I do enjoy some Stratovarius, Blind Guardian and Kamelot though.

-Death metal is really a subpar genre. Nile is far and away the best DM out there.

-Devin Townsend was once metal's salvation, and now I'm happy to say he's moved on to more interesting things. But nobody, NOBODY, had the pipes for metal vocalizing that he once did. NOBODY!

I dunno. When the vocalist is good (such as the case with Matt Barlow of Iced Earth, Ihsahn of Emperor, Ray Gillen formerly of Black Sabbath, etc), then yeah, I agree.

But I can't stand the majority of metalcore/power metal vocalists, mainly for the fact that they're either really nasal/whiny (in metalcore's case), or sound like they have a pit-bull attached to their nads (a lot of power metal bands).

I haven't heard Crack the Skye, but I have Leviathan, Remission, and Blood Mountain, and aside from a couple songs from Leviathan, I can't say I care for Mastodon at all. :/

South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss are the band's best, in my opinion.

You just pretty much said the complete opposite to everything I would have said about those bands.

I agree on the Pantera statement though. Dimebag is one of the most overrated guitar players ever.

Dime was overrated as FUCK, I agree. But I really like Pantera... it's not the most artistic music in the world, but it's just a blast of sheer aggression. It's good for listening to when down, really gets one energy-filled.
