Anyone else here a fan? He's probably my favorite metal musician, and SYL were one of my favorite extreme metal outfits for sure. The breadth and scope of his back-catalog is absolutely jaw-dropping, his vocal range astonishing, his guitar skills evolved from good to brilliant and he's always had a knack for keeping solid musicians behind him (of note, Gene "The Machine" Hoglan, God's gift to double-bass work). Anyone not privledged enough to have heard any of his stuff should stop what they're doing and get on that, pronto. Ask me for recs. Enjoy the skullet! (also, RIP skullet )

Hah, "Relentless" and the album it comes from aren't all that great. What you want to do is search youtube (equally lazy and won't be providing a link, at least right now) for "SYL - Love?" or "SYL - Zen" and enjoy the carnage. Also note that if the more extreme nature of SYL isn't your thing, every single one of his solo/project albums offer something different, from mainstream radio rock to progressive metal to...other weird things. Seriously, the man is a musical chameleon, and no one album is an accurate portrayal of everything he's capable of. If a few youtube songs wet your whistle, you owe it to yourself to check out no less than 3 solo/SYL albums combined. I'd go with these:

Infinity (under his own name)
City (under SYL)
Synchestra (under The Devin Townsend Band)

Bumping with possibly the best SYL song.

This band is legit. Like, as in, my favorite band ever legit. And Devin is a god (and holy fuck so is the drummer). This is part of the reason I am so excited that COB is supposedly going into the studio with him.

If that's SYL's best, then they have nothing to offer me. Terribly mediocre band.

Well, subjectively. My favorite, rather...

I've always admired Devin Townsend as an artiste and performer. But I admit that Strapping Young Lad is a band that took me quite a while to appreciate; initially I didn't like or rate it too highly at all. After only moderately liking their debut disc, 'Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing', I wound up not listening to any of their stuff for years on end, before buying on a whim, their 2006 album, The New Black. I liked it a lot, and then quickly bought their prior albums. My firm favourite SYL albums remain the classic 'City' (easily their best one) and 'Alien' and 'The New Black'. The s-t album is also pretty good overall. And frankly, fans of live albums in general (and SYL converts, particularly) cannot miss their must-have live release, 'No Sleep Till Bedtime'. Besides, Devin's solo career has also yielded some pretty cool metal music.

So yea, today I count myself as an enthusiast of SYL's inventive industrial death metal music.

I've heard most of the rest of SYL's stuff, too. I wouldn't judge them on just one song.

I listened to some of this yesterday, pretty ave imo.

Synchestra is a pretty terrible album imo
