I don't know how many of you here have had much real exposure to, or even enjoy, quality tech-dm, but if any of you is a fan of the likes of--for example, Necrophagist, Atheist, Cynic, Spawn of Possession etc, I reckon you might really dig Obscura a lot.

Has anybody here heard them? Anybody a fan?

I found out about them only this year, took serious listens, and believe that they're pretty darn good. I'm not a particularly huge fan of straight-up tech-dm or many of the acts that's been around and out there now, but I still like many tech-death bands, albums and some of the shows I've seen. Obscura are reputedly, a 'phenomenal' live act. They are scheduled to tour with mighty Cannibal Corpse, all over Europe, this Fall, this year. Awesome Before you ever watch them, though, why not sample a bit of what they gotta show? I wish I had access to far better samples of their great songs, to post here. But check this out, for what it's worth.

I really like tech death, and I've heard of Obscura, but I haven't actually listened to any of their music.
Cosmogenesis is probably one of my favorite releases so far this year. Great band.
Great band. I think the debut is better than Cosmogenesis.
Is that even possible? Cosmogenesis is like a 10/10.
Holy fuck, why didn't I start listening to this band earlier! Eek
I really like the production on their stuff, especially their second album.
Also, Jeroen Paul Thesseling Notworthy
Hugely overrated band, imo.

Haven't you lately been saying that Cryptopsy and Death are all the tech death you need?
I like the genre, but those two bands are just so far ahead of anything else I've heard. Decrepit Birth and Decapitated too. I dunno, I just think that the vast majority of tech death bands do it completely wrong.
I don't really view later Death as tech-death (it honestly sounds more like technical or progressive thrash... I hear no death elements in the riffs whatsoever), but Cryptopsy is solid.

As for tech-death, people already know my stance: Actually well-composed tech-death, like Obscura, Gorguts, Cryptopsy, select few Necrophagist songs, are awesome for me. Deedly-deedly-doo masturbatory bullshit like Brain Drill or Spawn of Possession (I like the song Scorched, but that's it), I really wish bands of that style would just stop existing.
Obscura is actually pretty poorly composed though.

EDIT: mid-era Death, particularly Human, is tech-death.
Human, yeah, I hear death metal all over the place on that one.

But stuff like Symbolic? Sound of Perseverance? That absolutely is not death metal, and I refuse to refer to it as such.

As for Obscura being poorly composed... are we listening to the same band here? Cosmogenesis is tech-death genius.
Quote:Bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling has left German progressive death metallers OBSCURA. In a statement released to BLABBERMOUTH.NET, Jeroen explained, "Due to repetitive conflicting schedules with job related obligations I have decided to depart OBSCURA. Beside the limited availability that kept me away from touring during the last months, I feel like taking new directions in my musical development. "Looking back, the cooperation with OBSCURA has been positive and successful. However, it's time to move on and find new challenges and opportunities for my musical career. "I would like to thank all the fans who supported us and wish OBSCURA all the best with their future work."
Sad Sad Sad
Looking on their MA page now, apparently Steve DiGiorgio plays with them as a live musician. It would be pretty sweet if he joined them full-time, though that seems pretty unlikely.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Erk Erk Erk

EDIT: Wow, it'd be sweet if DiGiorgio joined up with them for good. Or at least for a few albums.
DiGiorgio wouldn't be bad to hear in them at all, but the loss of Thesseling still stinks.
these guys are pretty sweet
DiGiorgio is even better than Thesseling. And considering the last Sadus album sucked and he doesn't really do a whole lot with his other projects, I would definitely not be displeased if he started to focus on Obscura.
Well, reading the statuses on Obscura's site, the names getting thrown around most (by the fans) are Steve DiGiorgio, Dominic Forest Lapointe (aka "the former bassist of Augury" or "the dude in Beyond Creation") and CannibalisticZombie from youtube Pacman
Fuck em all, DiGiorgio 4 lyf
